Who We Are
The Friends of Gorham’s Pond are a group of concerned citizens of Darien dedicated to restoring and protecting the natural beauty, ecological health and community value of the vital Gorham’s Pond Watershed, including the pond, the Goodwives River and the Stony Brook River.
Through education and community engagement, this group of volunteers strive to raise awareness of the environmental and conservation issues that are impacting this area. We are also actively working on projects to preserve the water flow through this area.
In 2016, with funds from the state, the Town of Darien and private donations to the FOGP, the upper pond was restored. A new dam and DEEP-mandated fish ladder was built and 50 years of road sediment was removed. Due to the dedication of the Friends of Gorham’s Pond and the support of our community, this project was recognized by the Department of Fisheries. Gorham’s Pond has evolved into a haven for biodiversity, offering a sanctuary for fish, birds, and native plants.
We are now concerned with the area immediately below the Goodwives River Bridge and where the Stony Brook river flows into the pond. Sandbars are impeding the flow of water and interfering with the run-off from over half the land area of Darien.
FOGP volunteers are now working with engineers to define the scope of work required to maintain the functionality and beauty of the pond, and will be soon looking to shepherd plans and applications through the required government agencies.
Over the years, its serene waters and picturesque surroundings have made Gorham’s Pond a beloved destination for residents seeking recreation, reflection, and connection with nature. We will not be able to pursue the goal of safeguarding the pond’s future without the continued support of our members and the community. We welcome any comments and involvement.
The Friends of Gorham’s Pond Inc. is a non-profit corporation, organized under Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal revenue Code.
